Minutes from the April 2009 Meeting 


April 18, 2009

Lulu’s Restaurant

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Arlin Markham at 1:00 p.m. The invocation was given by Compatriot Robert Dunlap Jr.  Compatriot Gene Twyman led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Robert Dunlap Sr. led the Pledge to the SAR.

 

Introduction of members and guests:  There were11 members and 16 guests present.

 

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap Jr. read the minutes of the March, 2009 meeting. Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

 

A treasurer’s report was not provided.

 

Compatriot Bill Doyle reported that there have been 2 applications approved; one for Compatriot Alfred Robertson, and one for Youth Member Justin Duval.  There are applications pending for 9 members. 

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. provided a report of the activities of Colonel Locke’s Own Color Guard.  The first parade of the year—the Red Bluff Round-Up Parade—was completed today.  There are three additional parades scheduled for May.  On the 2nd of May, we have the Shasta Damboree Parade, on the 9th of May, the Cottonwood Rodeo Parade, and on the 16th of May, the Redding Rodeo Parade.  Compatriot Dunlap Jr. informed the members that President Markham has a “parade car” in which color guard members unable to march might ride during a parade.

 


Old Business:

 

The request for a color guard for the Relay for Life was found to be a request for “color” in the crowd for novelty’s sake, and not for a color guard.  Compatriot Dunlap Jr. reminded the members that the purpose of the color guard was to honor our patriot ancestors and our military servicemen and pay respect for our flag.  We do not engage in activity for novelty’s sake or to support political agendas. 

 

 

New Business:

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. read an e-mail message from Compatriot Reverend Westling expressing his regrets that he was unable to attend this meeting.  Compatriot Dunlap Jr. also informed the members of Compatriot Bill Nicol’s recent Cataract surgery and his inability to attend.   

 

 

Guest Speaker:

 

President Markham introduced our guest speakers:  Joyce Morrow, and Janell Longnecker, of the Judge Richard B. Eaton House Museum project.  Our speakers provided very interesting information regarding the history of Judge Eaton, his family and the conversion of his house into a museum.   Following the presentation, President Markham presented Ms. Morrow and Ms. Longnecker with Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

 

The 50-50 drawing in the amount of $17.50 was won by Pam Dunlap, who graciously donated her winnings to the Color Guard.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m. with the reading of the SAR Recessional led by President Arlin Markham.

Minutes from the March 2009 Meeting 

March 21, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot Vice President Scott Young at 12:00 p.m. The invocation was given by Compatriot Robert Dunlap Jr.  Compatriot Robert Young led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Bill Doyle led the Pledge to the SAR.

 

Introduction of members and guests:  There were13 members and 15 guests present.

 

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap Jr. read the minutes of the February, 2009 meeting. Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

 

Compatriot Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $1,122.91 and the Color Guard account balance is $562.80. 

 

Compatriot Doyle reported that applications are pending for 2 members and 2 youth members.  There are 5 applications currently being developed for submission.

 

 

Old Business

 

Compatriot Robert Young briefed on the results of his work to determine whether presentation of an SAR paperweight to Dorothy Epperson would be appropriate to honor her late husband and former SAR member, Robert Epperson.  Mrs. Epperson informed Compatriot Young that she considered the previous presentation of the SAR War Service Medal a sufficient tribute and she respectfully declined further presentations. 

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. reported the following items: 

1.                   That filing of the IRS Form 990N, electronic post card, identifying Redding Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution as a tax-exempt organization, has been completed. 

2.                   That he had submitted the Annual Report to CSSAR acting Secretary, Jim Faulkinbury, and that Compatriot Faulkinbury has announced his candidacy for the position of CSSAR Secretary for 2010.

3.                   That the request for transfer for Compatriot David Jones was received by CSSAR Secretary, Jim Shadwick and forwarded to NASSAR for processing.

 

Compatriot Chuck Anderson reported on the Color Guard request for the opening ceremonies for the Relay for Life event on the 30th of May.  Compatriot Anderson provided contact information for the event chairman. 

 

 

New Business:

 

Compatriot Robert Dunlap Sr. reported on a radical group using the likeness of the Gadsten Flag as a banner for their organization.  Compatriot Doyle had additional information on this group, known as 9/12, a controlled opposition group which was highlighted on the Glenn Beck program. 

 

 

Guest Speaker:

 

 Compatriot Dunlap Jr. introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Roy F. “Pete” Peters, a local attorney who specializes in Estate Planning and Elder Law.   Mr. Peters discussed the difference between wills and trusts and how each works.  He fielded questions from very interested members regarding disposition of an estate, the appropriateness of having both a will and a trust, the value of a reverse mortgage, and need to have expert guidance in these matters.  He clarified terms such as durable powers of attorney, healthcare directives, conservatorships and pour-over wills.    Following the presentation, Vice President Young presented Mr. Peters with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

 

The 50-50 drawing in the amount of $21.00 was won by Compatriot Gene Twyman, who graciously donated his winnings to the Color Guard.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m. with the reading of the SAR Recessional led by Youth Compatriot Kyle Clark.

Minutes from the February 2009 Meeting  

February 21, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Arlin Markham at 12:30 p.m. The invocation was given by Compatriot Robert Dunlap Jr.  Compatriot Gene Twyman led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Bill Benage led the Pledge to the SAR.

 

Introduction of members and guests:  There were14 members and 11 guests present.

 

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap Jr. read the minutes of the January, 2009 meeting. A correction regarding the chapter website was identified.  Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved, as corrected, by voice vote of those members present.

 

Compatriot Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $1,193.91 and the Color Guard account balance is $437.80. 

 

Compatriot Doyle reported that applications are pending for 3 members and 2 youth members.

 

 

Old Business

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. read a Certificate of Appreciation presented to Colonel Locke’s Own Color Guard for their participation in the Redding School of the Arts Colonial Days event in November.

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. announced the dates of the Red Bluff Round-up Parade as April 18.  He requested available Color Guard members participate in this event.  Due to a time conflict between the parade and the regularly scheduled SAR meeting, it was decided to move the April 18 meeting time to 1:00 p.m.

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. reported that a $250.00 donation was received from the Redding Peace Officer’s Association.  These funds will be used specifically for outfitting prospective color guard members.  Compatriot Bill Benage previously expressed interest in participating in the color guard and was provided uniform items, including a coat, shirt, vest, and breeches. 

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. reported that Compatriot Dave Denton had contacted the parents of a new Eagle Scout and offered to present a certificate to congratulate him.  At the time of this meeting, Compatriot Denton has not received a response.

 

Compatriot Doyle reminded members of the Heritage Faire to be held on February 28, 2009 at the Church of Latter Day Saints Auditorium on Churn Creek Road.  Assistance in setting up the area and manning the SAR booth was requested.

 

New Business:

 

Compatriot Bill Doyle reported on the passing of former SAR Member Robert Epperson.  Compatriot Robert Dunlap Sr. suggested that a grave medallion be acquired and affixed to Compatriot Epperson’s columbarium plate.  Compatriot Robert Young stated he would contact Mrs. Epperson to determine her desires in this regard.  Louise Locke informed members that Veteran’s Cemetery policy does not allow for placing medallions on the columbarium plates. 

 

Compatriot Doyle reported that The Freedoms Foundation has graduate courses available for Civil War, French-Indian War and on the Constitution.  Compatriot Doyle has application information for those interested.

 

Compatriot Dunlap Sr. informed members of certain SAR medals and of their placement on civilian attire. 

 

Compatriot “Chuck” Anderson asked if Color Guard members would be interested in presenting the Colors at the Relay for Life event in June.  A resounding “yes” was replied.  Compatriot Anderson is to gather additional information and provide it to the Color Guard Commander.

 

DAR Regent, Ruth Dunlap reported that Liz Benage inquired whether she could make a dress and participate in color guard events.  Mrs. Benage was given a hearty answer in the affirmative to both questions. 

 

Guest Speaker:

 

 Compatriot Dunlap Jr. introduced the guest speakers, Mr. Dale Trudeau and Mr. Ray Frisbie, both of the Shasta County Past Grand Jurors Association.  These gentlemen gave a very interesting presentation on the qualifications, purpose and orchestration of the Grand Jury.  Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Frisbie fielded tough questions from a very interested audience.  Following the presentation President Markham presented Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Frisbie with  Certificates of Appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

Minutes from the January 2009 Meeting

 

  

January 17, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Arlin Markham at 12:10 p.m. The invocation was given by Guest Speaker, Dr. Jerry Nystrom.  Compatriot George Bush led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Gene Twyman led the Pledge to the SAR.

 

Introduction of members and guests:  There were 13 members and 11 guests present.

 

The installation of officers for 2009 was conducted by Compatriot Stan Henderson, Past President, CSSAR North.  Compatriot Henderson officially presented President Markham with a gavel.  The following officers were installed:

Bill Doyle, Registrar

 

Compatriot Markham presented Compatriot Twyman with a past-president’s Pin and Certificate.

 

Compatriot Markham presented new member, Greg Holmes with his Membership Certificate, Record Copy of his Application and Rosette.

 

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the November 2008, and December 2008, meetings. Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

 

Compatriot Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $1,331.77 and the Color Guard account balance is $437.80. 

 

Compatriot Doyle reported that applications are pending for 3 members.


Guest Speaker:

 

 Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Jerry Nystrom, a retired doctor of optometry who is now President of the Board for the Remi Vista Youth and Family Services, Inc., and as President for Restoration Enterprises, Inc.  Dr. Nystrom volunteers with the California Transplant and Donor Network, which was the topic of his presentation.  Dr. Nystrom reported that there are currently over 8,000 people north of Sacramento awaiting an organ transplant.  One individual donor could potentially provide life saving organs, bones, or tissue for up to 6 recipients.  Registration normally might take place upon a driver’s license application; however, many times the donor network does not reflect this application.  Dr. Nystrom suggested that individuals confirm their name is on the donor network list via the website at www.donatelifecalifornia.org.   Dr. Nystrom answered many questions from the audience.  Following the presentation, Compatriot Markham presented Dr. Nystrom with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

 

 

Old Business

 

Compatriot Doyle reported on the Wreaths Across America event at the Northern California Veteran’s Cemetery on December 13, 2008.  6 Color Guard members participated in presenting and retiring the Colors for this event and remained to assist in placing wreaths upon gravesites.  Compatriot Doyle reported that he personally laid a wreath at the columbarium stone for Colonel Locke.

 

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. reported that the donation request from the Redding Peace Officer’s Association continues to be staffed and information regarding the status of this request is expected soon.

 

SAR Auxiliary member Susan Doyle reported on the status of our chapter website, now www.reddingsar.org.  Mrs. Doyle reported that she has contracted with JustHost.com for a two-year period of web-hosting service at a cost of $94.80.  Funds for this service were authorized by motion at the November, 2008 meeting.  The website is currently functioning and available; however, work continues to add pages and features.

 

 

New Business:

 

Compatriot Twyman deferred to Kate Lang who reported that she had sent 9 issues of the Liberty Bell to the NSSAR Library in Kentucky.  Ms. Lang suggested that our chapter continue to forward copies of the Liberty Bell to the library.  A motion to do so was made, seconded and approved via voice vote of members present.

  

Compatriot Doyle reported that the annual Heritage Faire will take place on February 28, 2009 at the Church of Latter Day Saints auditorium on Churn Creek Road in Redding.  Volunteers to man the table were requested.   Compatriot Doyle will give two classes on tracing ancestors.

 

Compatriot Scott Young motioned that we participate in the 2010 “Monday Night at the Theater” program at Prime 11 Cinema’s in Anderson.  The theater will donate 10% of the concession proceeds, not to exceed $100.00 to a qualifying non-profit organization.  Compatriot Young suggested that during a Monday night to be announced, volunteers in uniform would be available to answer questions regarding SAR to theater customers.  The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.   Compatriot Young will submit the application and make necessary arrangements.

 

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. reported that SAR is identified on the Lulu’s Restaurant calendar at noon on the 3rd Saturday for the remainder of 2009 (excluding July and August).

 

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. announced the invitation of SAR members to attend the DAR Awards Ceremony on February 17, 11:00 at the Grace Baptist School auditorium. 

 

Compatriot Bill Nicol reported that he received a check from family friend and recipient of the Liberty Bell.  Emma Louise Lile requested that $29.00 be donated to SAR in memory of her late husband, F.B. Lile. 

 

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. reported that he received a request for a scholarship from the father of a new Eagle Scout.  After a brief discussion, it was agreed that because the deadline for scholarships has long passed, presentation of the Eagle Scout Certificate would be appropriate.  Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. is to contact Compatriot Dave Denton for presentation of this certificate.

 

The 50-50 drawing in the amount of $27.00 was won by Peggy Blodget.


Guest Speaker Dr. Nystrom provided 2 insulated coffee mugs for door prizes.  They were won by Ruth Dunlap and Compatriot Bill Nicol.

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 12:30 p.m.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr.   Youth Member, Kyle Clark, led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Vice President Arlin Markham led the Pledge to the SAR.

Introduction of members and guests:     There were 12 members and 15 guests present.

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the September, 2008 and October, 2008 meetings.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $2,102.52 and the Color Guard account balance is $332.80.

Compatriot Registrar Bill Doyle reported that applications are pending for 2 members.

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:

  • The Color Guard completed a flag program for Lavender Hills Assisted Living Facility on November 7.   A “Thank You” letter from Karol Smith, Director, Lavender Hills, was read.   Ms. Smith expressed her appreciation for the program.
  • The Color Guard also marched in the November 8, Shasta Lake City Veteran’s Day Parade.
  • 2 flag programs for the Redding School of The Arts are scheduled for the 21st of November.

Old Business:

Compatriot Doyle orchestrated nominations and elections for 2009 chapter offices which were previously unfilled.   The 2009 officers are as follows:

Compatriot Doyle reminded members and guests that the Chapter Christmas Party will be held at the Doyle residence, in Bella Vista, on December 20, 2008.   All members and their guests are welcomed to attend.

President Twyman reminded members of the chapter’s commitment to jointly participate with the Major Pierson B. Reading Chapter, DAR, in the Wreaths Across America program.   The program is to take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Northern California Veteran’s Cemetery on December 13, 2008.   President Twyman identified volunteers by means of a show of hands.

DAR Regent, Ruth Dunlap provided an update on the status of the gravesite of Major Pierson B. Reading.   As mentioned in the October joint meeting, the gravesite was damaged during a summer storm and an attempt was undertaken to locate individuals or groups responsible for repair to the site.   Regent Dunlap announced that she discovered that the Native Daughters of the Golden State were responsible for the site and they were notified of the damage.

New Business:

Compatriot Dunlap, Sr. identified that due to internet service provider policy changes, the chapter website, orchestrated by Susan Doyle would no longer be available.   Compatriot Dunlap, Sr. motioned that an amount not to exceed $100.00 be made available to Susan Doyle to arrange a new website, which would include domain name, set up and annual fees.   Monies raised from 50/50 drawings would henceforth be dedicated to funding the website.   The motion was seconded.   After a brief discussion, the motion was approved by voice vote.

Guest Speaker:

Compatriot Twyman introduced our guest speaker, Dr. William Shadish, retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel. Dr. Shadish spoke on his service just prior to the Korean War and how he found himself a Prisoner of War for the next 3 years.   Dr. Shadish recalled how he began his captivity weighing 200 pounds, and upon his release, he weighed 100 pounds.   He spoke of the “good” times and the bad and how he and his fellow prisoners of war coped with harsh conditions, extreme adversity, and life-threatening sickness and disease.   Compatriot Twyman presented Dr. Shadish with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

There was no 50-50 drawing.

Minutes from the October 2008 Meeting

October 6, 2008

2008 Joint meeting with the Major Pierson B. Reading Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.

The meeting was called to order at 11:05 a.m. by DAR Regent Ruth Dunlap.   The DAR Chaplain opened with the appropriate reading.   Compatriot President Gene Twyman led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag, and Compatriot Robert Dunlap, Sr. led the SAR Pledge.

Introductions: There were 10 SAR members and 32 guests present.

Program:   Compatriot Color Guard Coordinator Bob Dunlap, Jr. gave an account of the Battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse and displayed the flags named for these two battles.

Business:   Compatriot President Twyman dispensed with the reading of the minutes of the September meeting and would read those minutes at the November meeting.

There was a brief discussion regarding the gravesite of Pierson B. Reading and who might be responsible for repairing its recent storm damage.

Compatriot Bill Doyle identified the benefits of a youth member being approved at an early age. The Youth Member would thereafter not be required to pay additional fees until application was made for adult membership.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:03 with the reading of the SAR Recessional by Compatriot Vice President Arlin Markham.

Minutes from the September 2008 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 12:30 p.m.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr.    Compatriot Vice President Arlen Markham led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Registrar Bill Doyle led the Pledge to the SAR.

Introduction of members and guests:    There were 11 members and 13 guests present.

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the June, 2008 meeting.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $815.59 and the Color Guard account balance is $316.30.

Compatriot Registrar Bill Doyle reported that applications are pending for William Benage, Lance Smith, Robert Johnston, James Holmes, and Charles Anderson at CSSAR.

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:

  • 15 events have been completed during this year.
  • Since the last meeting, the color guard completed a Posting of the Colors ceremony for the Anderson Youth Soccer League opening ceremony.
  • The Old Millville Day parade, which was scheduled for June 28, was cancelled due to smoke and fires in the area.
  • There are no events scheduled for the Color Guard.

Compatriot Dunlap, Sr. read the Preamble to the Constitution to commemorate the occasion of Constitution Week.

Old Business:

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. read a letter of thanks from the Anderson Youth Soccer League Committee Chairman, Becky Ransom, for the Color Guard participation in the opening ceremonies.

Compatriot Young reported that he attended a school assembly at Redding Christian School, and presented Devin Johnson an Outstanding Citizen certificate and pin for his actions to aid his classmate who appeared to be choking. Compatriot Young provided more background information on the incident, including corroboration from Devin Johnson’s mother who witnessed her son’s efforts.

Compatriot Doyle led a discussion to identify members for 2009 chapter offices as follows:

Compatriot Robert Dunlap, Sr. requested that his name be withdrawn for consideration for the position of Secretary for 2009.

Compatriot Doyle announced that the Chapter Christmas Party will be held at the Doyle residence, in Bella Vista, on December 20, 2008. All members and their guests are welcomed to attend.   Installation of chapter officers will take place at this event.

Compatriot Twyman reported that he had received an e-mail message from Marston Watson encouraging chapter members to participate in “Wreaths Across America,” on December 13, 2008. The national effort will organize patriotic and civic organizations to place a wreath at each gravesite at every Veteran’s Cemetery in the nation. It was moved and seconded that the Redding Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, would participate jointly with the Pierson B. Reading Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and lay wreaths at the Northern California Veteran’s Cemetery in Igo. &bnsp; The motion was approved by voice vote.

Ruth Dunlap, Regent, Major Pierson B. Reading Chapter, DAR, reported that a joint SAR/DAR meeting will be held October 6, at Lulu’s Eating and Drinking Establishment. This joint meeting will constitute the monthly meeting for SAR.

Guest Speaker:

Compatriot Twyman introduced our guest speaker, Donald Avey, retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel.    Colonel Avey gave an interesting presentation on his early history in Shasta County, (including a period of time in which he was a class-mate of President Twyman, at Shasta High School, a fact that was not known prior to the meeting).    Colonel Avey recounted his missions as a B-52 Navigator during which closed-course endurance records were set.    Colonel Avey also provided background and insight into the Cuban Missile Crisis.   Compatriot Twyman presented Colonel Avey with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

Minutes from the June 2008 Meeting

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 12:25 p.m.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr.   Compatriot Vice President Arlin Markham led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Robbie Mayfield led the Pledge to the SAR.

Introduction of members and guests:   There were 9 members and 10 guests present.

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the May 2008 meeting.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $857.75 and the Color Guard account balance is $316.30.

Compatriot Registrar Bill Doyle reported that the application for Patrick Duval has been approved by NSSAR.   Three other applications are pending at CSSAR and an additional application is awaiting signature.

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:

14 events have been completed during this year.   Since the last meeting, the color guard completed 3 wreath-laying ceremonies for Memorial Day.   They also completed a Colors presentation ceremony on Flag Day at the Redding Grange Hall.

1 event is scheduled for the Color Guard:

Old Business:

Compatriot Young motioned to invite Devin Johnson to a future SAR meeting and present him with the Good Citizen certificate and pin.   This is for his actions to aid his classmate who appeared to be choking.   The motion was seconded, and approved by voice vote.   Compatriot Young is to contact the student and arrange the presentation.

Compatriot Young suggested Donald Avey, retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel as guest speaker for our September meeting.   It was suggested that Compatriot Young contact Colonel Avey and make the request.   Compatriot Young agreed to do so.

New Business:

DAR member Kate Lang suggested that we have a birthday party for Louise Locke upon her next birthday.   President Twyman stated he would take the matter under advisement.

Compatriot Doyle reported that Compatriot Robert Dunlap, Sr. has consented to serve as Chapter Secretary for 2009.

Guest Speaker:

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. introduced our guest speaker, Pete Stiglich, retired USAF Colonel.   Colonel Stiglich gave an interesting presentation on his military history which included his role as a United Nations Military Observer in Cambodia in support of a UN-sponsored peacekeeping accord; and in Bosnia, Croatia, and Hungary in support of NATO operations.   Colonel Stiglich provided answers to many questions from members and guests present.   Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. presented Colonel Stiglich with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the Redding Chapter, SAR.

The 50-50 drawing (for $16.50) was won by Compatriot Doyle, who donated his winnings to the Color Guard Account.

After a rousing bagpipe serenade by the Jefferson Pipe Band, the meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 12:30 p.m.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr.   Compatriot Kyle Clark led the Pledge of Allegiance, and President Twyman led the Pledge to the SAR.

Introduction of members and guests: There were 8 members and 14 guests present.

Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the April, 2008 meeting.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young reported that our general checking account balance is $915.00 and the Color Guard account balance is $316.30.

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:
8 events have been completed during this year, which include 4 parades for which we have received 3 first-place awards.
The Redding Rodeo Parade results have not been announced as of time of this meeting.

New Business:

Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr. read a notice from the Spring, 2008 edition, Leader Express, published by NSSAR.   The notice identified the number of cases in which the IRS examined a tax-exempt organization in 2006.   The number one reason an organization was examined was because they allowed a political candidate to speak at an official function.   An additional 9 reasons all dealt with endorsements of a political candidate.

Guest Speeaker:

President Twyman introduced our guest Speaker, Pat Watson.   Mr. Watson is the author of a two-volume almanac of World War II.   He gave a very interesting talk on how he came to write the book.   Mr. Watson gave a brief history on his time in the Army and his life prior to coming to Redding.   Mr. Watson donated a book of the history of the Revolutionary War to the chapter.

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 2:10 p.m.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Chaplain Lester Westling. Compatriot Robbie Mayfield led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Bill Doyle led the Pledge to the SAR.

Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr., read the minutes of the March, 2008 meeting.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

 

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young reported that our checking account balance is $961.11, which includes a deposit of $300.00 from an anonymous member who refinanced a home loan.   A check written for potential member Robert Stultz was returned by the National Society pending further verification.   No figures were available for the Color Guard checking account.   The report was moved and seconded and approved by voice vote.

Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., gave the Color Guard activity report: 7 events are scheduled for the Color Guard:

  • A discussion took place regarding Redding Chapter attendance at the SAR National Congress in Sacramento on the 5th of July.   There was no commitment on attendance although Compatriot Bill and Anne Nicol plan to attend.

New Business:

  • Compatriot Secretary Dunlap, Jr., stated that he would be unable to continue as Secretary for 2009 and requested that members consider filling this position.
  • A discussion took place regarding our guest speaker for our May meeting.   Compatriots Doyle and Dunlap, Jr., agreed to pursue potential speakers for this date as well as for the June meeting.

The meeting was called to order by Compatriot President Gene Twyman at 12:00 noon.   The invocation was given by Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr.   Compatriot Registrar Bill Doyle led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Compatriot Vice President Arlin Markham. led the Pledge to the SAR.

Introduction of members and guests:     There were 8 members and 8 guests present.   Our guests included our guest speaker, Redding City Councilman, Ken Murray.

A treasurer’s report was not given due to the absence of our treasurer.

Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr., read the minutes of the February, 2008 meeting.   Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Old Business

  • Compatriot Doyle reported on the Heritage Faire which was held on February 23.   One application for SAR membership was completed.   Compatriot Doyle is confident that the application will be accepted.

 

New Business:

  • Compatriot Doyle identified that a potential conflict between our April 19 meeting time and the Red Bluff Round-Up Parade.   Compatriot Doyle motioned that our meeting time be adjusted to 2:00 PM allowing participants in the parade to complete their commitment and attend the meeting as well.   The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

Guest Speaker:

President Twyman introduced our guest speaker, Redding City Councilman, Ken Murray.   Mr. Murray has been in Redding for 35 years and has held various positions in city government, including Mayor.   Mr. Murray touched on his Irish heritage; although he has not done sufficient research to validate a Revolutionary War ancestor.   He also discussed the rationale used by Redding City Council members in determining courses of action.   A question & answer session followed.   Mr. Murray was then presented a Certificate of Appreciation by President Twyman.

The 50-50 drawing (for $20.00) was won by Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., and donated to the Color Guard Account.

Introduction of members and guests:     There were 9 members and 15 guests present.   Our guests included our guest speaker, Colonel David Price, USA, Ret. Col. Price is currently a police officer at Anderson Police Department.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young gave the treasurers report:

  • There is $760.61 in the general account and $287.65 in the Color Guard account.

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:

  • 2 events are scheduled for the Color Guard:
    • The Tehama Republican 2008 Dinner is set for May 3.
    • A school program for Manzanita School is set for 12:30, February 22.
  • All flag poles are now of equal height, thanks to the work of Ruth Dunlap and Pamela Dunlap.

Old Business

  • Compatriot Dave Denton stated that he will work to identify Eagle Scouts deserving of an Eagle Scout certificate and make the presentation.
  • Compatriot Young motioned that a $25.00 donation be made to the Children of the American Revolution (CAR).   The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
  • Compatriot Young briefed that he was unable to verify that a high school soccer player saved the life of a fellow soccer player.   Compatriot Young suggested that an, “Outstanding Citizenship” pin and certificate be presented to this student who assisted his fellow soccer player.   Compatriot Dennis Herring suggested that the pin and certificate be presented at a school assembly.   The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
  • DAR Regent Ruth Dunlap reported on the DAR Awards Essay contest and on the Wounded Warrior project.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., reported on past Knight Essay Contest winner, Benjamin Dykstra’s recent accomplishment of making the Dean’s List at U.C. Santa Barbara.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., also reminded those present of the Heritage Faire to be held on Saturday, February 23, at the LDS Auditorium.

New Business:

  • Compatriot Dennis Herring has a Power Point program of a 7-year old who sings the Star Spangled Banner.   He will arrange to send it via e-mail to anyone who would like it.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., read two requests for donations.
    • One, from the Sober Grad Party in Red Bluff, and
    • another from the Naval JROTC students who are raising money to honor Vietnam Veterans who were killed in action.
  • If anyone is interested in contributing to these causes, contact Compatriot Dunlap, Jr.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr., reported that the IRS requirement for tax-exempt organizations to identify their status via the IRS 990N, electronic post card, has been complied with.

Guest Speaker:

President Twyman introduced our guest speaker, Colonel David Price. &nbsl; Col. Price has been an Anderson Policeman for 14 years.   He recently retired from the U.S. Army Reserves after 4 years of a continuous mobilization.   Colonel Price gave a very interesting and informative report of the military challenges and accomplishments in Iraq.   A question & answer session followed.   Col. Price was then presented a Certificate of Appreciation by President Twyman.   President Twyman also presented Col. Price with the SAR Law Enforcement Medal and certificate.

Introduction of members and guests: There were 9 members and 6 guests present. Our guest included our guest speaker, Commander Dean Whetstine, USN, Ret. Cdr Whetstine is the Senior Naval Science Instructor, Naval Junior ROTC Unit, Enterprise High School.

Compatriot Secretary Robert Dunlap, Jr. read the minutes of the November 2007, and December 2007, meetings. Approval for those minutes was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote of those members present.

Compatriot Treasurer Robert Young gave the treasurers report:

  • There is $815.36 in the general account and $336.23 in the Color Guard account.

 

Compatriot Dunlap Jr. gave the Color Guard activity report:

  • The Color Guard account debit card was a victim of a scam operation; however, the unauthorized activity was identified and charges to the account were reversed.
  • A letter to The Shasta Regional Community Foundation was read, expressing our thanks to that organization for their donation to the Color Guard
  • The Color Guard has been requested to post the Colors at the Tehama County Republican 2008 dinner on May 3, 2008. No other activities were firmly scheduled.

 

Compatriot Bill Doyle gave the Registrar’s Report:

  • Kyle Clark’s application for Youth Member is currently being processed by CASSAR.
  • Compatriot Doyle explained how to registrar as a Youth in SAR.
  • Jerry Duval’s application has been sent to CASSAR.
  • Compatriot Jon Clark was introduced as our newest member.   Compatriot Clark gave a brief report on his patriot ancestor, Christopher McManus, New Jersey.   Compatriot Doyle presented Compatriot Clark with his record copy of application, Certificate of Membership, and Rosette.

 

Old Business

New Business:

  • Compatriot Robert Dunlap, Sr. thanked the membership for their support over the past years.
  • Compatriot Young recommended that a Law Enforcement Medal be presented to Officer Price, Anderson Police Department, who is also an Army Colonel.   The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
  • Compatriot Young briefed on an incident in which a 15-year-old soccer player performed Heimlich maneuver on a team mate, quite possibly saving the life of his team mate.   Compatriot Young suggested that a Good Citizenship Medal be presented.   The matter was tabled pending further verification of the facts in this incident.
  • Susan Doyle briefed that they now have high-speed internet capability and will soon change the website address.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. read an invitation from the DAR to attend an Awards ceremony on February 2, 2008 at 11:00.
  • DAR Regent Ruth Dunlap reported that there are 3 District winners for the Essay contest and Good Citizen Awards to present.   The ceremony will be at Grace Baptist School in Redding.
  • Compatriot Young read a letter from the Children of the American Revolution requesting a donation.   The topic was tabled pending verification of our previous’ years donation.
  • Compatriot Doyle will be checking with Compatriot Dave Denton regarding the Eagle Scout presentations.
  • Compatriot Dunlap, Jr. briefed on the upcoming annual Heritage Faire to be held at the LDS Auditorium on February 23.

Guest Speaker:

President Twyman introduced our guest speaker, CDR Dean Whetstine. CDR Whetstine gave a very interesting talk on military life and the ROTC course of instruction at Enterprise High School.   Following his words, CDR Whetstine was presented a Certificate of Appreciation by President Twyman.
